The Intern I - Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) Inspire Grant – Horticulture is an exciting opportunity for a motivated high school student interested in comprehensive experience in municipal horticulture. The position is intended to serve in diverse capacities throughout the Parks division, with work specifically emphasized in the City's Greenhouse operation.

This position supports the goals of the Parks, Recreation and Libraries Department, which enhances the quality of life for all Westminster citizens by providing diverse leisure, recreational and informational services and resources; and acquiring, developing and maintaining first-class parks, facilities, open space and recreational trails. This position works towards the accomplishment of the department's mission: Together we create exceptional opportunities for a vibrant community with a commitment to nature, wellness and literacy.

This is a paid, temporary, non-benefitted internship opportunity. Workdays and hours are flexible. Duration of the position may be one to two semesters at the supervisor's discretion. Allowance for required clothing, footwear, and safety gear (gloves, eye and ear protection, sunscreen) may be provided on an as-needed basis.

JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks

  • Works closely with greenhouse mechanical operations (heating, cooling, irrigation, etc.)
  • Participates in watering and fertilization processes, both in the greenhouse and in the field
  • Scouts for insects and diseases that affect greenhouse crops
  • Researches and implements methods of insect and disease mitigation
  • Assists in production of poinsettia, annual bedding, vegetable crops
  • Assists in propagation techniques such as seeding, division, and cuttings
  • Provides plant identification for weeds, annuals, perennials, grasses, shrubs, trees
  • Participates in preparation, planting and maintenance of annual beds
  • Plants and maintains perennials
  • Uses small horticulture equipment including rototillers, augers, and string trimmers
  • Maintains interior plants
  • Designs and produces floral centerpieces for various city events
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance

POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications
Required:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Must be currently pursuing a high school diploma or GED
  • Experience in Microsoft Office (including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Experience and/or demonstrated interest in Horticulture
Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.
Physical Requirements
Work is active in nature and requires sufficient physical stamina and strength for:
  • Frequently sit, stand and walk through a multi-level facility
  • Occasionally squat, bend, kneel, twist, climb, balance and reach overhead
  • Frequently lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to 10 pounds; occasionally lift, carry, push or pull items weighting up to 25 pounds
  • Constantly use hands and fingers for fine manipulation; occasionally use light and firm grasp
  • Frequently see objects up close to perform tasks and far away to observe activity for safety hazards or problems
  • Constantly use hearing to interact with guests and staff and recognize trouble outside of view

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed indoors with additional outdoor activity. Indoor and outdoor work could be performed in a high public use, multilevel recreation facility or park where loud noise and multiple events and activities at one time may cause a distraction. The position requires communication with City employees, the public, and outside agencies.
Required Materials and Equipment
Personal computers, keyboards, calculators, telephones, copy machines, and other standard office equipment, and AED machine.
