Job Description:

The Analytical Chemist I is the first level in the class series within the Forensic Chemistry Unit (FCU), Division of Forensic Science (DFS). The FCU is comprised of two sections: controlled substances and fire debris. Under the close supervision of a technical supervisor, the incumbent develops the knowledge/skills/abilities to conduct standardized laboratory testing to analyze and report the presence of controlled substances from evidence submitted by from law enforcement agencies within the state of Delaware.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Prepares samples for instrument analysis, interprets instrument recordings and documents test results.
  • Uses analytical chemistry techniques including state-of-the-art instrumentation to gather data involving samples.
  • Analyzes laboratory data to determine quantity and quality of toxins, pathogens, chemical and biochemical constituents.
  • Prepares reports identifying samples, explains testing methods and documents findings and conclusions of analysis.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Analytical Chemist I
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemical Technology, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Studies, Biology or related field.


  • Six months experience in using laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
  • Six months experience in physical, organic, inorganic or analytical chemistry.
  • Six months experience in conducting clinical
laboratory tests.
  • Six months experience in performing mathematical and statistical computations on laboratory test data.
  • Conditions of Hire

    A satisfactory background check (including a fingerprint based background check administered by the Delaware State Police) is required as a Condition of Hire. The selected candidate will be required to submit a buccal swab for DNA upon employment and subjected to randomized drug testing during the term of their employment.
