POSITION SUMMARY:

Prepares food items and serves members of the college community. Works cooperatively in a safe and sanitary manner with other staff and student workers to ensure the efficient and professional operation in accordance with work rules and departmental policies and standards. Creates a cordial, welcoming atmosphere for all customers under the direction of the Retail Manager. Works collaboratively to meet sales goals determined by the Retail Manager and assumes full responsibility for unit operation in absence of Lead Chef, Cook, or Manager. Reviews upcoming catering requests, retail product levels, and food orders and initiates action as an appropriate response to any given circumstance or to activity within the unit. Responsible for cashiering, cash management, and reconciliation of receipts. Assumes tasks required for any station as rotated or assigned, and

remains flexible in response to immediate needs of operation. Works a schedule as assigned in accordance with catering units and the collective bargaining agreement. Floats when operationally necessary.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Prepares and cooks menu items in accordance with department and merchandising standards by following established recipes and instructions. Preparation of menu items may include but is not limited to short-order grilling, frying, baking and sautéing in an open kitchen setting, as well as, assembly and service of

salad/sandwich items. Adheres to portion control guidelines and checks food for proper temperature, flavor, and finished appearance. Assists in the setup of food stations and contributes to the food preparation for all shifts. Inventories and orders supplies either by informing Lead Chef or Manager or placing order directly with vendor depending on assignment. Checks in, weighs, inspects, and stores food deliveries. Reports any discrepancies of itemization or unacceptable quality to Manager or Food Purchasing Office immediately. Responsible for meeting the customers’ dietary/allergen needs.

Delegates work to student workers and instructs in the proper, and safe use of equipment. Trains student workers as needed, on the job. Assists manager with student schedules, training, and communication

Communicates with all people accurately, professionally and in a timely manner. Projects positive public image. Promotes sales and enhanced customer service by actively communicating to customers during point of purchase and by utilizing promotional materials. Responsible for reviewing, understanding and communicating all departmental policies, standards and notices. Utilizes e-mail and all college computer access responsibly. Intercedes in responding to customer service issues in the absence of the manager. Produces signage as needed for the Retail & Catering operations via the computer.

Cleans and sanitizes all dining service areas and equipment, and attends to routine floor care on each shift. Supports and maintains proper sanitation and recycling procedures. Utilizes and properly stores leftover food to ensure safe product handling and effective food cost control. Monitors station prior to and during service to ensure a clean and organized appearance. Rotates food under refrigeration and in displays and monitors food quality and sell by dates.

Attends training sessions, workshops and meetings as requested. Participates in the preparation and service of special events, as needed. Completes required payroll forms and scheduling forms within deadlines. Initiates teamwork, collaboration, and cooperation between co-workers. Accounts for payrolls.

Adheres to all established policies and accounting procedures in order to control and secure stock and monies especially as it pertains to cash register transactions and to monitoring procurement activities within the operation. Completes shift cash receipts reports and money handling and completes any transfer or production records as requested, or required.

Performs all other job related or relevant tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: At least two years of combined educational and/institutional or commercial experience in quantity

cookery which includes short order work and experience with computerized cash register, as well as demonstrable customer service skills.

Education: Completion of high school education or equivalent. Ability to communicate effectively

both verbally and in writing and perform basic arithmetic functions.

Certification: Must obtain the following certifications within one year of hiring and stay current with Serv-Safe, Food Allergen, Serv Safe Alcohol and Anti-Choke.

Preferred: Culinary Arts Degree at a post-secondary level.

Skills: Must have a valid Massachusetts Class III driver’s license. Must complete and comply with all college driving credentialing requirements. Upon award of this position, a Division of Motor Vehicles background check will be completed. Requirements of the position are consistent with the responsibilities and duties of persons within the food service profession in adherence with all state and federal guidelines. Tolerates exposure to water and cleaning chemicals.

Tolerates higher than normal noise levels, heat and humidity consistent with conditions produced by commercial kitchen equipment. Must demonstrate adequate physical strength and coordination to effectively prepare, clean and receive supplies while properly utilizing standard food service utensils and equipment. Must be able to safely lift and move 50 pounds, work from a step stool, walk and stand for prolonged periods of time, bend, reach, pull and push.

Must also be able to manipulate utensils and equipment repetitively for variable periods of time – up to 70% of an assigned shift. Must possess good vision and hearing. Must be adequately mobile between work stations. Must possess the sensory ability to taste and smell. Must practice good personal hygiene and wear clean uniforms in compliance with public health standard and consistent with college policy.

Adheres to the sustainability initiatives set by the department. Must possess basic computer skills including

receiving and sending emails, ordering relevant supplies from purveyors, and sign making.

Schedule: 40 hours per week for 39 weeks per year.

Monday 10:00 am- 6:00 pm
Tuesday - off
Wednesday- off
Thursday 10:00-6:00 pm
Friday 4:00-12:00 am
Saturday 4:00-12:00 am
