Staff Scientist performs independent scientific research including complex laboratory testing, experiments and analysis following established protocols. Designs and develops research objectives for experimentation. Analyzes and evaluates findings. The Vermeer lab is looking for a staff scientist with neuroscience expertise that includes but is not limited to: electrophysiology, use of retroAAVs for neural tracing, use of optogenetic constructs in vivo, knowledge of molecular mechanisms of neural signaling as well axonogenesis in development and disease. Assists in completion of grant applications and other regulatory documents. Writes technical summaries and co-authors articles for publication. Prepares and makes formal presentations of research results.
Typically works under broad direction of principal investigator. High level of knowledge in scientific research processes, procedures, and objectives. Possesses ability to implement experiments in the subject discipline with the ability to trouble shoot issues. Good knowledge of the principles and techniques of the subject discipline required.
Possesses ability to run complex pieces of equipment requiring advanced specialized training. Must possess knowledge of modern research methods, data collection and analysis. Significant experience in analyzing and evaluating data.
General level of knowledge of project management, decision-making, and analytical skills. Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with a research group or team.
The Vermeer lab is leading the way in the emerging field of tumor innervation. This exciting area is quickly growing. Our ability to utilize human samples along with in vivo and in vitro studies sets us apart and puts us in a optimal position to test promising therapeutics that modulate tumor-infiltrating nerves in clinical trials.
Areas of expertise include but not limited to:
- retroAAVs for retrograde neural tracing
- defining exosome cargo (miRNAs, proteins, mRNAs)
- molecular mechanisms of neural signaling
- axonogenesis in development and disease
- optogenetics (compatible constructs, in vivo activation)
Areas of technical expertise include but are not limited to:
- Ca+2 imaging
- in vivo studies involving pharmacological interventions
- co-cultures of isolated murine DRG with tumor cells/immune cells/stroma
- use of XONA-CHIP co-culture system
- in vivo injections of viruses for neural tracking
- animal studies with neuronal interventions (e.g. nerve tracing, optogenetic activation)
- retro-orbital injections of optogenetic contructs for in vivo imaging
Requires a doctorate degree in a clinical, health, or life science field.
Minimum of three years post-doctoral experience in related subject field of study. Equivalent to Instructor. Management experience is highly recommended.
