Job Description

The Advanced Energy Systems group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has a history of developing innovative solutions to problems of national significance in energy, global climate change, and national security. The Advanced Energy Systems group is currently seeking an Entry Level Process Research Technician. The position will support PNNL scientists and engineers in the development of new materials and processes associated with advanced conversions, separations and power generation. The candidate will be responsible to multiple projects, supporting test planning, set up, execution, and data analysis. The significant quantitative dimensions of this position include:

  • Following written procedures for operating laboratory test systems involving high pressures, low temperatures, electromagnetic and chemical hazards.

  • Supporting the documentation of work in laboratory notebooks and recording and processing data acquired from testing.

  • Chemical, materials and equipment purchasing.

  • Accurately estimate time required to complete tasks, and meet deadlines as assigned.

  • Participating constructively and taking ownership in the success of interdisciplinary project teams.

  • Interfacing with crafts personnel and outside vendors in the process of fabricating devices and acquiring hardware.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma and 0-2 years of relevant work experience or Technical Institute Graduate/relevant Associate’s degree and 0 years of relevant work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Operating knowledge of a variety of processing equipment, such as pumps, motors, thermocouples, pressure transducers, etc.

  • Mechanical aptitude necessary for assisting with the assembly of complex laboratory test systems.

  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written, and the ability to clearly communicate objectives and results.

  • The ability to

contribute to and follow safety planning procedures for industrial equipment and processes.

  • Working knowledge of MS Office suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Knowledge of laboratory process equipment, such as mass flow controllers, thermocouples, pressure transducers, and gas chromatographs

  • Familiarity with fabrication methods, such milling, sheet metal, EDM, welding, brazing, and soldering

  • Trained in data acquisition and controls, preferably LabView.

  • Familiarity with electrical and control systems and the ability to troubleshoot.
